ArcGIS Enterprise 11 provides users with the ability to host custom widgets, which can be integrated with Experience Builder for greater flexibility and functionality. However, hosting custom widgets can also come with potential risks and challenges, especially when it comes to managing them in an enterprise environment.
To mitigate these risks, we propose a comprehensive approach to managing custom widgets, including hosting them in a single, well-managed location, registering them in a registry that is easily accessible and kept up to date, utilizing Python scripts to scan all Experience Builder portal items and track usage of each custom widget, and implementing a proper retirement process.
It’s important to remember not to delete custom widget items from the Enterprise 11 portal without ensuring that no Experience Builder applications are using them, as this can cause the entire Experience Builder to fail to load. We recommend communicating with stakeholders about deprecated custom widgets and their planned retirement timeline, and updating them promptly about any changes to custom widgets.
